No oil has no effect on the pasta. It's the amount of water you put into the pan. You need to add enough water so the pasta has room to move around and cook, this causes the pasta not to stick together. Oil keeps the water form foaming up and boiling over. Salt just adds flavor to the water for the pasta.

According to the Food Network show Good Eats, adding oil to pasta water doesn't really do much because a scant amount of the oil is absorbed. (less than a teaspoon of an added tablespoon.) Therefore, it's not enough to keep the pasta from sticking to itself.

Adding salt to pasta water keeps the pasta from tasting like paste - my own personal experience.

Well, what do you know- the only thing I learned in college chemistry class, and I get to share it with you. Do you know why you put the salt in?? Water boils at a higher temp when salted- pasta will cook faster. As for the oil- I don't use it, I put butter in the water- the pan won't boil over when boiling on high!!

lots of salt,NO oil,
oil is not needed ,waste of time ,and money.
use as much water as you can,make sure it's really boiling !
4 quarts per pound of pasta
1 oz of salt per 4 quarts of water
make sure water is rapidly boiling
if pasta is being held for later service a small amount of oil can be used to prevent sticking

I was always told just to add salt to the water. The actual action of the water boiling and ocassional stirring will keep the pasta from sticking together.

Salt the water well but do not add oil. The oil offers no benefit.
