A long sharp knife. Stab repeatedly into chest until conjestion clears.
Or you could try Nyquil and bedrest if you want to be unoriginal....

Take a hot shower and then go out in the cold weather. Try eucalyptus oil either smelling it or pour a few drops into a small pot of water and bring to boil. Take the pot off the stove, place it in a comfortable location, make a tent with a towel, and hold head over the vapors. Breathe in and exhale deeply.
Do you have a humidifier? A cold mist humidifier does not dry out the bronchioles the way a steam vaporizer does.

honey really does help- a spoonful at bedtime- and the darker the better. like buckwhaet honey (i got it at a health food store. i'm not a naturalist, but if it works better than drugs, i'll take it! we are going through this right now with me and two of my kids. we have a humidifier in their rooms, which helps loosen up the congestion, but the best thing we've done- i've actually been able to sleep and they don't cough at night!!) is get pediacare plug-ins. they are night lights you plug into the wall and it releases eucalyptus, lavender and chamomile. they are amazing! they are in the pediatric cold medicine section, but they are not medicated. i sleep so deep, and i usually really have a hard time, even when i'm not sick. and the babies are sleeping much better, too. there's one other brand that had a menthol cherry scent, but the pedia care one is the best!

If you are taking prescription asthma medications and still having problems, you need to see your doctor. You have inflamation of the airways if you are congested and the doctor will determine if you have viral infection or other reason your prescription is not working really well now. Surveys show that roughly 50% of asthmatics use some form of unconventional therapy. Alternative treatments may be in addition to prescription medications. there are many websites with Asthma information. I mostly use Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica online. Signs and symptoms In some individuals asthma is characterized by chronic respiratory impairment. In others it is an intermittent illness marked by episodic symptoms that may result from a number of triggering events, including upper respiratory infection, stress, airborne allergens, or exercise. An acute exacerbation of asthma is referred to as an asthma attack. The clinical hallmarks of an attack are shortness of breath (dyspnea) and either wheezing or stridor. The airways of asthmatics are "hypersensitive" to certain triggers, also known as stimuli (see below). In response to exposure to these triggers, the bronchi (large airways) contract into spasm (an "asthma attack"). Inflammation soon follows, leading to a further narrowing of the airways and excessive mucus production, which leads to coughing and other breathing difficulties.

Have you tried these things yet?
Rub Vick's on your chest and then put a towel over your chest and go to bed that way .I know this may sound weird but try rubbing the bottom of your feet with Vick's and put a pair of socks on and go to bed,That will help the coughing at night.
Warm mist humidifier with Vick's liquid in it.

Don't take drugs and stop consuming dairy products which cause respiratory problems. See site below on fastest way to get over the cold or flu. In January some hospitals have no more room due to flu patients.

Robitussin's guaifenesin syrup. Tastes terrible but it's the best stuff in the world. And it doesn't interact with other medications. Feel better!
