He is different.
He has changed lives.
He was the only one among other gods who claim He is God. Usually, i hear things like, it is either Jesus is a crazy man or he is really God when he claimed this.
He came, and because of him, the timeline was split.
There are many reasons to prove Jesus existed and that he was not a mad man and that his claim was true.
I guess you have to experience his touch for yourself.
JESUS LOVES YOU (:

Jesus may be one of the most well-known persons who has ever lived, but I disagree that he is the most popular. Not everyone aggrees with who he was, what he did, or what he represented at the time. The other thing, Jesus is not "the most the most well-known", rather one of the most well-known. The same way you can say that Harry Potter is also well known, plus Madonna too. The reason for so many people in the world knowing about Jesus, is because of the revolutionary person he was. Overall, he tried to make Jerusalem, or His world at the time, a better place, by going against void ancient Jewish traditions and Roman oppression. For all that he died, and became a martyr. Often martyrs are remembered by future generations, plus his disciples started to spread the word of His divine origins. The Apostle Paul also used many of the established beliefs of other religions at the time to give credibility to Jesus origins, teachings and missions. Many religions recognize Jesus as historical person, others see Him as a divine being. Although mainstream Judaism doesn not recognize Jesus as the Messiah (Christ), many Jews are now accepting His messianic mission (they are called Jews for Jesus). On the other hand, Islam also recognizes Jesus as one of the great prophets that has ever lived the earth, in such a way that God saved Jesus from the cross by replacing him with a look-alike, and transported him to heaven, but to return soon to clean the earth.
However, the major reason why Jesus is well known, is due to the missionary work done by the Christian Faith over the centuries, first done by the Roman Catholic Church, and organizations connected to it, but also lately done by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the Jehova's Witnesses. I have to say that many other christian religions have paid an important part in spreading the Christian word and making Jessu known all over the world.
To finish, I forgot to mention that in India, there is a widespread ancient Hindu tradition that says that Jesus lived there between the ages of 12 to 30, and well after his crucifiction (from which he survived). It doesn't really matter what is true or not, what matters is what he represents: love, friendships, brotherhood, sisterhood, and other positive adjectives. This is why he is well-known.

I think it has nothing to do with who he was, or the fact that many believe he was divine or a prophet, or that he was an important figure in his time. I think it's entirely because for a very long time many people have done everything they could to make sure every soul on the planet knew who Jesus was. There's even a Jesus movie that's been taken on laptops into Africa, to show everyone. Virtually everyone on the planet knows who he is because his zealous followers make sure they do everything to get the message everywhere.

Printing press and population growth.
Then again since there is no proof of any such actual person, who would be the second most popular? Ann Frank? Einstein? Since 2/3 of the world does not believe in Jesus, then perhaps your statement isn't quite true, I'm sure Santa or harry potter are pretty popular too.

i believe it is because of the Christian religion in general. the most basic message behind it is to be a good person and do your best to help others and do good in the world for the betterment of humanity. also, many of the symbols found in early christian religion were adaptations of symbols of the pagan religions that early christians would try to get converts from. by using those symbols, plus with the simplicity of christianity, it made the religion seem inviting. the symbols offered familiarity, while the simplicity just made life simpler. then, later in christianity's history, you have people like those in the crusades, who forced the christian religion on other cultures under penalty of death, therefore spreading the religion further.
but either way, christianity got a lot of publicity, and got a lot of followers. that's why Jesus is so famous and influential.

www.adherents.com lists Muhammad as number 1 in the top 100 most influential people of all time. Jesus is number 3 after Isaac Newton. This site is completely unbiased. You should check it out.

I find this a narrow Western view of things. Who is to say if you asked the 1.3 Billion Chinese or 1.1 Billion Indians (India) that they would say Jesus was the most popular figure to have ever lived? I doubt they would give Jesus as an answer.

What Made Him the Greatest
Because he carefully imitated his heavenly Father, Jesus was the greatest man who ever lived. As a faithful Son, Jesus copied his Father so exactly that he could tell his followers: “He that has seen me has seen the Father also.” (John 14:9, 10) In every situation here on earth, he did just as his Father, Almighty God, would have done. “I do nothing of my own initiative,” Jesus explained, “but just as the Father taught me I speak these things.” (John 8:28) So when we study the life of Jesus Christ, we are, in effect, obtaining a clear picture of just what God is like.

When your the best, people remember you.
When you can do stuff no one else can, you are legendary.
When you rule over all other things, you're King.
When you raise from the dead, everyone else packs up and leaves - There is no competition.
