I want to take my family to the snow next month (in January). Where's the best place to go in Southern California to see REAL snow? I was thinking about Big Bear, but I'm not sure if it'll be snowing then. Thanks.

Look You can go to Mountain High, but it is very horrible, bad service, and small, this is located in Wrightwood. Next, there is Mt. Baldy which is up from Mt.Baldy road. It is More quiet and slower than the other resorts it is nice but, dosent have many lodges to sleep in, I belive there are only 9. Then there is Big Bear Where you can find Bear MOuntain and Snow SUmmit. These two are sister companies But Its your oppinion which one to choose Bear MTN. Is more known for its terrain park and long steep runs. Snow Summit is very Big. Then if your with a Family you should try Snow Valley which is Near Big Bear. Here You could get very good lessons, I learned to snowboard here, ITs also easier for a first timer. Finnaly If you count Mammoth as SO CAL. Then its the best choice its big and offers everything.

Big Bear also makes artificial snow - so yes there is usually snow in Big Bear in January - how much, that depends. You can check their website to see a snow status.

If you want to guarantee yourself snow - go to Mammoth Mountain.

It snows in Mammoth and Mt. Palomar like the other person said.
You can also ride the aerial tramway in Palm Springs. It is a good place to go cross-country snow skiing or snow-shoeing. It gets very cold & windy up there so bring winter clothing. The websites are below.

There was a lot of snow on the mountains last time I looked, I doubt it will all be gone by next month.

There should still be some snow in Big Bear next month, but you can always check the conditions before you leave.

Mt. Palomar? It's snowing there a lot, but next month there's going to be a school of 6th graders staying there [for two weeks].

This might be close to you.
It looks like you can e-mail them for a snow report.
