Heck yes! It really irks me. I've been working at my job for 3 years and only got today off. We have 5 new hires and they all wanted Christmas eve AND day off! They should be thankful we hired them with that attitude!

It depends on the situation.

Sit #1: Employee is taking care sick relative/child/pregnancy.

I wouldn't be too annoyed as long as I can get the same consideration as her/him.

Sit #2: Employee just wants off often for no particular reason.

I'd be a bit annoyed, but I'd also want to be able to have my vacation that I had planned for before getting the job if I were the new employee. On the other hand, the new employee should have informed the employer of the time off needed or been informed of the policy for new employees and vacation time.

It all depends on what the policy is and if they were informed.

I have been at my job almost 5 years and I have seen a lot of those kind of people come and go. Those are usually the ones that end up quitting where I work, because when they start doing that, my boss cuts their hours, that way when they whine about not having enough hours, she simply tells them to stop requesting every other day off. I work all three shifts at my job and I work holidays, weekends, and overtime. I say if you can't work the hours, don't take the job.

Yeah where I work they will lie on their availability and say they have open availability and can work weekends but when they get hired they say Oh I can't work weekends anymore and I need holidays off

Yeah, those are the naive ones that don't give a damn. Watch them get shown the door quite quickly.

Yes, some people get hired thinking they are "owed" seniority. LOL Take 'em down a notch if you have to.

I don't care what other employees do.

As long as it doesn't affect me they can take off every day.

New employees need time to adjust their living arrangements.
Holidays are everyone's right.
