What is an easy way to get a coconut to release it's meat for easy consumption?

Have a coconut here and I can't get it to release from the shell. Looking for great tips.

My Mother used to just take a hammer and lightly tap on it all around. Meat came right out.

In India, they have these tools/graters and little appliances. But, here you can just soak the whole piece in cold water for 20-30 minutes, then it's just prying pieces out using a butter knife. I love coconut, it's worth it!
