It would be cheaper too go through your dad's, but if you get your own it will be cheaper for you down the road.

It will be cheaper if you are on his But IF YOUR DAD HAS ANY ASSETS AND YOU WREAK YOUR DAD AND YOU ARE ON THE HOOK FOR ANY AMOUNTS YOU AND YOUR DAD GET SUED. They get to go after all assets..
If you don't own much and your dad doesn't have much then you have nothing to worry.
But if you insure yourself it's only on you..... It cost more but no one else is responsible except you and the insurance company

The savings will be great if the car is in his name and you are listed as a part time driver.

Well, who's name is the car going to be titled in? If it's going into your name, the policy needs to be in your name. If it's going into your dad's name, IT'S GOING TO BE HIS CAR.

Sure, it's probably going to be cheaper on his policy - because then the cars will get a "multi car discount". But any claims checks will get made out to HIM, not YOU.

It would probably cost you more to have your own separate policy, but at some time you'll have to do that.
