I'm in the USA.
Yes, I keep a gun for protection, and THEREFORE, it is in use AT ALL TIMES.
If it is not present, and avalible AT ALL TIMES, it is USELESS for protection.
Have I ever shot anyone with it?
No!
Have I ever pointed it at anyone?
No!
But the point IS,
If I require it for protection, IT IS THERE.
Let me ask you a question...
Do you keep a fire extinguisher in your house for protection against fires?
Have you ever had to use it?
No?
Does that mean you don't NEED it?
If you DO NEED one,
and you don't HAVE one,
it doesn't do you an awful damn lot of good, does it?
A protection weapon is like a fire extinguisher.
It's a piece of protective equiptment you HOPE you never have to UTILIZE, but If it is not present, (AND THUS, IN USE AS A PROTECTIVE DEVICE), and you suddenly NEED it, you are screwed!

The purpose of firearms kept for self protection is something that one would want to answer "A" to. No one I know keeps a firearm for protection and WANTS to use it. But having the RIGHT to have it if needed is one of the Blessings of living in a country that places it's citizens and their right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness above the right of the government to have control of all aspects of the citizens life. Our Nation was founded on the principle that every citizen has the freedom to act within the law in their pursuit of life and livelyhood, and has the right of self protection when the cause should arise. Our founding fathers knew that no nation can provide complete and constant protection against all attacks, be they internal or external.
So if you are amassing some sort of 'logic' against private ownership of firearms because the need isn't a constant or repetative need, get ahold of a few copies of teh AMERICAN RIFLEMAN and read the monthly section called THE ARMED CITIZEN.
I may never have need of a firearm to protect my self, family or community, but I have the GOD GIVEN RIGHT to possess the ability to do just that.
Screw the queen, Long Live Liberty.

A*, however the vast majority of law enforcement officers during their whole career of 20 or 30+ years have never used their own firearm in self-defense.* What applies here is the old Boy Scout Motto "Be Prepared".* The most important thing is that one has the means available to them to administer deadly force if there is a need or incident that would require it.* Every gun owner hopes that that day never comes, but is ready if and when that day or night would come.* U. My 2cents - for free.
I have kept firearms all my life and E if you must know. But I can't see the relevance because...
1) In 25 years of riding a motorcycle i have had only one accident, a very long time ago, yet you'll not find me riding without my helmet and leather.
2) I've never been in a car accident yet always wear and have always worn my seat belt. Even before the laws.
3) I've been a homeowner for my entire adult life, have never had my home catch fire, large or small, and yet 4 extinguishers are available and maintained therein.
Maybe you could explain the "relevance". are you even "allowed" to keep a firearm on your "country"?

I live in the good ol' USA. I have never had a problem with a home invader yet, and I live in a rural area. Most everybody I know owns guns, whether they go hunting or not.
I am so glad I had mine, when I was going through my nasty divorce, (and a broken jaw) I had the cops on the phone and gun in hand when the SOB was on my porch after busting my pickup all up in my own yard. Long story short, he still owes me for the damage but I let sleeping dogs lie.
I so appreciate the fact that I have the right to bear arms.

D, within the last month. Actually shoot it, no, nothing that dramatic. I live where police response will be anything from 20 minutes to an hour -- rural. When someone escaped from a prison (within 5 miles / 10 km), I had my gun nearby. When someone knocks at my door at 0400 because their car broke down, my revolver is in my pocket. When I leave for work, my spouse knows where it is. I'm using it for protection like I use my friends for money -- never, but comforting to know it is there.

Answer: F within the past decade.
Country: The good old US of A.
I also have a concealed carry permit and am never without my pistol, a ParaOrdnance P 14-45 .45 cal. Within the last two decades I have used it twice to defend and protect myself and my wife. That makes three times in twenty odd years that a firearm has saved my life and that of my wife.
I understand that since the gun buyback and confiscation of firearms in Australia in 1998, there has been no decrease in violent crimes committed there.
If you feel that you have no need to protect and defend yourself, I have no problem with it and wish you luck.

I think it might be time to change the locks! "Yahoo Dullards: This is a question... not chatting... please note that this is asked in question format, in an open community, to all at YA! If for some reason you get confused and feel this is chatting, feel free to explore the use of an auto battery & jumper cables on various body parts. Have a nice day" - Too funny!

F. Maybe well it was 15 years ago. I was in high school and I had broken up with the chick well she did not take it well. She tried to run over my mom and grandmother. She stole and killed two of my dogs and she tried to break into my house with a knife to kill me. Thank god for Mr. Right my rem 1100 shotgun. I loaded some #7 in him and let the bolt slam home right by the door she was trying to jimmy. As soon as it went slap the jimmying stopped and I heard foot steps running away. I called my step mom and told her what happend and she called the police and told them hat happend. After that she never bothered us ever again.
But I always have one gun loaded and ready to go at any time.

Never at home though I have used a concealed carry gun on more than one occaision. The last one was when a big dude tried to hijack my truck in Seattle, He wasn't expecting my Colt 45 lock and cocked pointing about 6 inches from his face as he reached through the open window of my truck to try to get inside. Thanks Samuel Colt! You live a less than "free country" as they have confiscated all semi-auto firearms downunder. What's next?
