i just answered a question and noticed that some one had put koala bear. koalas are NOT bears.

No, koalas are marsupials of the genus and species Phascolarctos cinereus. But they look like a small cuddly teddy bear, so you must excuse all us ignorant folks who insist on calling them bears. Old habits are hard to break.

For the same reason they call pandas "bears", weakfish "sea trout", sabretoothed cats "tigers", and blister beetles "Spanish flies". Not everyone studies taxonomy.

Perhaps they are ignorant? Not in the bad sense of the word, just the factual sense.

They look like teddy bears. It's wrong and I think most people know it, but it's pretty common usage...
