I had my daughter back in October. Tax season is coming up and I heard I couldnt claim her without her SS number. Is that true? The hospital usually files for it, but someone misplaces paperwork, etc so nothing ever got filed. Also...how long will it take to get a Social for her, since we need the money as soon as we can for bills. Thanks.

You must have a social security number for your daugther. Contact your local social security office tomorrow morning (Dec 26th) and apply for one. You have until April 15, 2008 to file your taxes.

There's plenty of time to get her SSN before the filing deadline. You can't file without it.

In the unlikely event that SSA doesnt' get it to you in time you should file without her listed by April 15th and then file an amended return once you get the SSN. If you absolutely know for certain that you will have a refund coming with her on the return there would be no penalty for filing late but if you do file late and owe money there will be penalties for late filing and penalties and interest for late payment of the tax due.

You'll need the ss# to claim her. Request the number right away, and you should get it by the time you need to file. It might be worth checking with your local ss office in case the paperwork did get processed, but you just didn't get the card.

You cannot get a credit for her if you don't have a social. I had the same problem. Don't depend on the hospital, best bet is to go to your local social security office and re apply. Once she has a number, it still takes a week or two to transfer to the IRS.

Yes, you *can* claim your daughter. If she came home from the hospital with you, you'll meet the lived with you requirement (there's an exception the year you are born).

The days of claiming infants without a number are over. You've GOT to the have the number.

I don't have my tax book from last year near by but I thought if the child was under 1 year old you didn't have to have a SS#. Maybe someone else reading this can verify it. You probably still have time to get one before you file if you need one. Just go on line and look up what you need. You can probably print a copy of the form also.

Don't worry about it. You can't file with her as a dependent until taxes in January 2009 as she did not live with you for more than 6 months of the year. That is when you will need her SSC so they can verify that she is your and no one else is claiming her. Check out http://www.financialplan.about.com/cs/taxes/a/childtaxcredit.htm
