Marriage, in some form, has existed since well before religion. Marriage is governed by the government's laws.

Both.

All religions co-opted the marriages of their cultures, but marriage was, and in some cases still is, a property arrangement between families.

Marriage came into existence after humans moved from a nomadic life to one of agriculture and stayed in one place.

In the west, marriage must be legally recognized by the state first (civil union). A church may or may not choose to recognize the marriage, but it's still legal and binding in matters of civil law.

there is no marriage ritual in the bible...........the ritual actually came from catholisism............back in biblical time a man father would build on a room......the man and his bride would go to the room, have sex and then the father would take the bloody sheet to be displayed by the guards at the temple.......that would be put in the mothers hope chest and passed down as an example to her female children.

God instituted marriage between man and woman. A man should leave his family to be with his wife. (Genesis 1:23,24) Plus, Eve was created to be Adam's helpmate (Gen 1: 18)
