I have gone thru the manual and i have searched page 107. my lens says AF or M. no MF. i have gone to that function and it is in ENABLED mode but it's still not showing. it only shows when i take the pic.

You answered your own question, if you want to upgrade to the D300 eventually then get the D200. Trust me its going to be much easier to just buy into a system and stay there. If you buy Canon now, you will loose money and good Nikkor lenses tend to be quite a bit more expensive. Alternately you could just jump for the D300 now, but if your eventual plan is to stay with Nikon, I would advise starting with them also. Be aware though, I have from some Nikon users heard complaints about a red hue to skin tones when shooting portraits. This was a while ago, so I dont know if that problem has since been worked out, but it might be something you want to look into, especially if you get an older Nikon like the D200.

If Im correct you can't...thats one of those pro cameras...like the Nikon D40..
The pros don't use the screen^^ So they don't let live view possible...but just get used to it, its seriously more fun, makes you feel like paparazzi
