Any console can overheat and the PS3 is no different. If you make sure to keep your console in an open area rather than tightly confined then it should be fine, but you can also buy extra fans to cool the system down just incase you suffer from it

The PS3 only overheats if it is in a very confined area and it doesn't get enough air flow and heat builds up. PS3's are VERY tough to overheat. As long as the PS3 is in a open area with plenty of air flow, it will NEVER overheat.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 are very different in engineering and design. The Xbox 360's have hardware failure regardless of what you do to prevent it because there is a 33% hardware failure rate. The PS3's hardware failure rate is less than 1%, so basically you don't even have to worry about the PS3.

I've had mine almost a year and it's never overheated or experienced any hardware failure.

I saw a Youtube video of someone trying to see if the PS3 would overheat and they put the PS3 in the vertical position in a very confined area with books and a VCR or some other kind of electronic device right next to the PS3 and he left it turned on to create heat while it was next to the PS3 and he left the PS3 on for several hours while taping it and it never overheated. He also kept a thermometer right next to the console to see how hot it was in the confined area and it was over 120 degrees and the PS3 was still running and didn't overheat.

Well my ps3 never gets hot at all. The fan rarely ever turns on.. I've noticed actually the fan only ever turns on when my furnace kicks in... But just for the record don't keep it in a place that gets too hot. As with any system make sure it has room to "breath." Don't have any obstructions near the vents.
But man on an off note ain't the xbox noisey when its fan goes on?

I pick Saberbla's answer but the Wii in my opinion never overheats.
