xterras are pretty good at doing anything. the first gens had a very strong 3.3 liter v6 with an optional supercharged 210hp version. (2000 - 2004 models) with a few cheap mods it is surprisingly capable off road and it has a pretty good view of the road. the downside, as stated above is that the first gens are notorius for bad gas mileage (15 - 18 depending on driving style)
the second generations on the other hand have the same flavor and style as the original but with marked improvements. it has a covered basket area on the roof rack (just in case you got some stuff you cant put in the truck like wetsuits) and a 4.0 liter 265hp v6. this engine is very strong for the truck and i believe 19 - 20 mpg is not out of the question if you drive "carefully". as for strength these trucks have a fully boxed frame and suspensions designed for off road use. and as for durability, it is a nissan so make sure your great grandchild will like whatever color you pick.

Very nice truck that is roomy, attractive, good for off-roading, and very durable.
Downsides are mpg - average of about 15-16mpg combined city/highway, and they aren't really comfortable (at least to me).
They are consistently rated by Consumer Reports as a 'best buy' in the small/Mid-size SUV category.

Ben J forgot that Xterria was 4x4 Motor Trend truck of the year 2005 and 2006. 05 and newer 4.0 liter 265 hp Xterria will run circles around a Wrangler. Take that Jeepers creepers! The motor is one of the ten best and over all I think you will enjoy your Nissan truck.

They are fine for going to the mall. If you want to take it off road, get a Jeep instead.
