I lived in honolulu, HI from age of 15-17, then my parents decided to move to New York. I now have a masters degree and will move back o hawaii. I can't see myself living anywhere else. We used to live in Hawaii Kai, which is now SOOOO expensive, over 700k for a house!!! what a difference 8 years can make. Does anyone know where I can get a decent house for 400-500 k?
Also, ladies, do you know of any places on the island where i can get my nails/ hair done for cheap? mahalo!

I'm a Realtor on Oahu. You can get a very nice townhouse in Hawaii Kai for the $500K - somewhere in the 1200 to 1400 sq ft range, 2 or 3 bedrooms, and some with a garage - if you are looking for a Single Family Home, you can find some North Shore, Mililani, Kapolei areas, but they will be fixers. My advice, start off with a nice townhouse in the area you want to live. Build up some equity, then move over to a SFH.

Seeing you come from SF, I would suggest you move to town (Honolulu) or anywhere close to town since that might be the thing for you.. then again, if you want to get away from it, you might as well move anywhere else. Personally I like Oahu the best, mostly because you got almost everything here.. whenever I am on one of the other islands, I tend to get bored in about a day. However, you might like the quiet surroundings :) Seeing you have a job and can work anywhere in the world (sounds familiar lol), you wont have a problem finding work and that is a good thing. The cost of living is indeed higher than on the mainland but if you are paying 3k for a place on the mainland, you shouldn't have much problems finding a rental below that price. Most rentals in town are about $1500 to $2500, for that price you will be able to get a decent apartment. The cost of living as for food and such, that will be higher though and you might want to do some research on that, everything has to be imported and that makes it a LOT more expensive than on the mainland. I think you should be able to make it with the 3k you currently pay for your place.. however, before you decide to make an actual move here, why not go for a holiday for a few weeks and see if there is any area that you might like :)

You can still get a 'decent' house in Puna or Kau on the Big Island in that price range, but that's about it. If you want a condo or a fixer-upper, you can spend $300K and up just about anywhere in the islands. I live on Kauai and when I moved here 2-1/2 years ago, the median single family home price was $667K. It's about the same now. Sorry -- I've been to Oahu lots of times but I'm not familiar with the real estate market there. As for hair and nails: good luck! One of my friends just moved from Kauai back to California and she said the thing she was most looking forward to was $10 manicures! LOL. Sure can't find those here.

Do you want a house or an apartment or even a townhouse. You will have to look farther away in areas like Pearl City, Mililani, Kapolei, Ewa Beach areas. Even those it can be pricey depending on what you are looking for exactly. You may have to rent a bit before finding the right place as well. The housing prices have gone through the roof but are going down somewhat compared to a year ago though.
