A dishonorable discharge is the most disrespected discharge the military gives out. It is the result of a corrective/disciplinary action. There are several discharges from bad conduct to general discharge under conditions other than honorable, there are discharges for medical reasons and convenience of government discharge and Honorable is the most respected and cherished. The Dishonorable is a shameful discharge.
That discharge if for all branches of service, not only the Army

A Dishonorable Discharge is one which can only be awarded by the sentence of a General Court Martial. It marks you as a convicted Federal felon. "Less than Honorable" is a condition attached to a General Discharge which can be awarded through administrative action. It does not mark you as a Federal felon.

It's a discharge (release from obligation to serve) in the military handed down by a court martial (kind of like a military court). If a soldier is convicted by a court martial of committing a major crime (such as rape or desertion) they receive a dishonorable discharge from the military and are essentially forced out of being in the army. It has other repercussions too, since you lose your veteran status and benefits as well as being possibly facing criminal sanctions from the civilian government.

It means you were tried and convicted of a felony in the eyes of the military. You probably were sent to prison, you forfeited all pay and allowances, reduced in rank to E-nothing and after prison given the boot.

Your life is over. You're not getting a job unless it's sweeping parking lots at McDonald's. And you are living in your parents basement. Forever.
