If not, why?
And is a crate needed for traveling?

A dog house is used outside to provide shelter from the elements. A crate (even an airline approved crate) does not provide appropriate shelter from the elements. The ventilation holes allow wind/cold/water/rain air in.

Therefore, you will need to purchase a dog house for out side and a crate for inside/travel. In the winter, purchase cedar animal bedding to put in the house. You can get the big bags at Wal-mart or Petsmart for about $6.00. The dog will kick it out from time to time so you will have to add more. Cedar bedding is preferred over blankets b/c 1. dogs tend to pull blankets out, 2. cedar helps to repel fleas.

The dog house - like the crate, should be just big enough for the dog to get into and turn around in. Many dog houses come with a door flap that you can leave or take off. The dog gets in the house and his body heat builds up in the house and helps to keep him warm (b/c of the vent holes -this does not happen in a crate). That's why you want to follow the guidelines on the house for the size.

Dog houses are for use outside. Crates are basically restricted for inside use and traveling. A crate, even one of the hardtop varieties, is not insulated enough for use as an outside house. You dog will not get proper protection from the elements, and the doghouse will remain very cold during winter and very hot during summer.

If traveling by flight, then yes, a crate is needed. A hardtop crate is the recommended type for flying. In your car, it depends on the dog. My dog rides fine in the backseat, but if your dog becomes anxious or scared during car rides, crates are a necessity for the safety of your dog - plus you don't have to worry about your dog and you can focus of the road. It just depends.

A crate isn't necessarily NEEDED for traveling, but it helps if your dog is restless in the car (or gets sick). They also make ''seatbelts'' for dogs.

Crates cannot be used as dog houses, as they do not protect against the weather, like a doghouse is made to do.

I have seen many people using those plastic crates for doghouses the last couple of years. They are not sufficient to keep a dog warm and dry. It is a very bad practice.

A dog house protects the dog from wind, rain, sun and even to a small degree from cold.

You need a crate or carrier for traveling for the dog's safety.

It depends where you live. I live in SoCal and use a crate on my patio as a dog house, I have used it for 1 1/2 years and it is still in very good shape.
