All day people have been sending me text messages wishing me "Merry Christmas, Happy New Year" and such. I think giving holiday tidings in text is rude and impersonal so I never respond. My sis says I'm wrong. I say a person should pick up the phone or say it in person. What do you think?

I actually do pick up the phone myself, once I've given my holiday tidings in a handwritten Christmas card.

Please do not diminish what the people have done--it was only a gesture accomplished quicker than mailed cards or long phone calls on a busy day. Tomorrow it will be gone and you won't have to care about it. I hope you had a nice day, anyway----if I knew your address I would have sent you a card. Happy New Year, too. Oh yes--20 years ago we didn't have computers that did this texting stuff--cards were the only way !!

While I think that any sort of holiday wishes should be responded to in some way. I agree that a text is very impersonal. A card is at least hand written, or a typed letter has some thought put into it. Unfortunately, texting has replaced a lot of actual personal interaction in the world today.

All up to the individual sending the message. If you want a more personalized one then give your version.

I like it more personalized, but since I don't know you that well, Happy New Year and Merry Christmas.

Sometimes it is more cost effective to send text messaging.

Isn't it about the thought that counts? I realize email is the 'cheesy' way out for some folks. I don't even do email but with one person in a closed account. So I don't go through this. I enjoy cards and phone calls. For me it's not about getting or receiving, it's about me extending love all year but especially during this season. So I do that by calling or mailing a card.

I hope you can see your way clear to accept love in whatever ways people contact you. Even if it's not your preferred form.
Blessings to you.

I agree with your sis. IT's not rude to text holiday tidings, in fact it's the most direct and personal way because you know they sent it just a few seconds ago and you should reply ASAP as soon as you received it. Why are people still clinging on to cards as the only appropriate form of greeting? Be more flexible.

Usually people are very busy with their family and friends and don't want to be rude to them by using their cell phones. I think it is great that many people texted you today. That just is the way of this world now -- technology rules. Be thankful you have friends who did this -- I didn't even get one phone call today let alone a text message.

I wouldn't say you were a Scrooge, this is just your personal preference. I would prefer to talk to someone in person, too, but some people just want to make sure that they greet as many people as possible on what is, for many, a very hectic day. You always have the option of calling someone in response to the text, I've done it.

I think you are wrong. I appreciate whatever greetings they give me and don't try to make the world revolve around the way I do things. Different strokes, but basically I see it as counter-productive to be so sensitive about all the little stuff in life. It certainly doesn't make me a better person, and I doubt that it helps you either. Accept what is offered and rejoice that they remembered you.

If you have time to text message you have the time to call. It is rude and I totally agree with you. Christmas is a special time of the year and messages should be treated differently and more personal.

I don't think it's rude anymore than sending a card is rude. But I also don't think you're wrong in not responding in kind. If you want to call in return that's fine, if you want to send a card great. Rude is feeling arrogant enough to think you're too good to receive any season's greetings that don't come to your standards.
