I have a bachelor of science in child development. I want to become an RN and work in pediatrics or the NICU. I thought my degree in child development would be good for this, but what is the best way to get my RN...should i just go to a community college and get it quick, or get the BSN? I need something that is cheap and fast so I can start back in the working life again. Thanks!

If you already have a bachelor's degree in another field, look for BSN programs called "Accelerated BSN" or something similar, it is designed for people like you with a previous degree. All you take are the BSN core nursing courses, it will take you about 2-3 years. Makes much more practical sense than going the Associates Degree route. Plus, these accelerated BSN programs are not as in demand as the traditional RN programs, so you might have an easier time getting admitted to a program.

Just an added note to the above-

At my hospital, only RN's with BSN's are permitted to work in pediatrics as well as the NICU... so if thats what you're after, best to take an accellerated BSN program (its quicker if you already have a degree)

Community college would be a faster route, and probably a lot cheaper. If you want to get into supervision, a BSN would be helpful and often required - if you want to work on the floor, the RN is likely enough.

If you get the RN, there's nothing to stop you from completing the BSN later.

Good luck.
