The Playstation 3 isn't region locked when it comes to PS3 games. But the resion lock is still active when it comes to PS2, Bluray, and DVD movies.(even the 80gb model)
Furthermore, PS2 games from the same region may not run on a PS3 if it is the 40gb model.

As you may or may not know, the PS3 when first launched came in two models: 20GB and 60GB ! Both models played PS2 games !
For various reasons, Sony decided to end production of the 20 GB version keeping the 60 GB version and introducing an 80 GB then later a 40GB. The 40 GB PS3 WILL NOT play PS 2 games !
The 60GB versions plays a more PS2 games than does the 80GB version.
Bottom line: The 80 GB versions plays a limited number of PS2 games while the 60GB version plays a wide range of PS2 games !

Ouch man. Theres thing such as region codes. PS3 games have no region restrictions I belive... However the PS2 games do.
Oh right. Thats propbably not the problem.. I just remembered in the Playstation store. I'll guide you through what you need to do.

- Browse By O-P
- PS2 System Data
And to the guy above. Yes 80 gigs can play PS2 games. Its the 40 gigs that can't

The 80gb doesnt play some ps2 games. Thats just how it is. I know this because my friend works at game stop. Sorry

I don't think US PS2 games will work on a japanese PS3.
PS3 games you're fine and some blu ray movies, but you're definately out of luck on the ps2 games.

the reason of this is because it will play ps2 games but only play hong kong version ps2 games. this is because there is region codes on ps2 games but not on ps3 games

when i bought my ps3 it wouldnt play ps 2 games but when i got recently released games it updated the ps3 and i can now play all ps2 games
