They're similar to leatherneck and wet-back.

The term derives from a physical condition of being out in the sun for a long period of time. I do find it amusing that "wet-back" is supposed to be a derogatory term for hispanics, because it indicates someone whose back is wet from hard work in the sun, which is the opposite of the usual stereotype of hispanics being lazy. It's as if people who are against hispanics can't make up their minds.

Likewise, leatherneck and redneck indicate doing hard work in the sun, which wouldn't normally be considered derogatory.

Stereotypes are rarely accurate, but it is even more absurd when stereotypes about the same group contradict each other. It really shows why such terms are stupid to use.

It's from the poor cotton farmers. They spent all day bending down with the sun beating on their necks so they got.... RED NECKS!

At least that's what dad tells me. It might also be because that's the color they turn when someone insults the South. Durn Yanks.

Hard working folks that like to drink and get rowdy when they don't have to work, go to church, or tend to family needs, tend to spend time outside alot. This being the case, there is a tendency for the back of the neck to get sunburned...seriously, that's where red-neck came from.

Now for cracker.

The sun burns your skin red. There's skin on the neck. It turns red. I really don't know but it's a possibility.

Why did you ask it in R&S?
