What do you think this dream meant?

I was walking around a grocery store with a notebook and pen, looking on shelves, writing things down, and passing to other aisles. Whatever I was writing wasn't a checklist or anything involving nutrition or prices; it was more like poetry. A man in his late thirties dressed in all black was following me around the store. I noticed him out of my peripheral vision, but ignored him. I remember him having a somewhat ominous and not completely human presence. He walked up to me and said something along the lines of, "You don't look like someone who can write like that. You write well for someone your age."

What in the world could this mean/symbolize? Thanks.

It felt more like prose, and I wasn't particularly impressed by it. I can't remember the specifics, but I do remember being conscious of him watching me and making an extra effort to avoid mistakes. After he gave me the compliment, I looked down at the paper and tried to hide sentences ending in prepositions.

You're a goth, or at least emo. The grocery store represents the mundane world of economics - and thus livelihood, as a writer. The dark stranger represents the mysterious world of publishers and critics. The bit about the prepositions is quite funny, and possibly represents your desire to fit in to the literary establishment. I wouldn't worry about it myself. There's nothing wrong with ending sentences with prepositions. In fact, I believe that you can do all kinds of things with the language, as long as you can still communicate clearly. Your teachers would most likely disagree, but keep experimenting.

BTW, thanks for the comments about my dream. I think you've pretty much nailed it.

Well, first of all how old are you? And do you advance in writing?
This could mean your in need of support (kind of like a cheerleader.) Or it could mean you really want to impress somebody.
What was the poem? Did it impress you?

You're probably trying to keep track of a lot of important but unfamiliar details you are afraid a stranger will judge you on.
