Keep in mind no gun reaches its advertised fps, to get even close, you need to use a light pellet like Beeman Laser.
A 40 grain .22 LR is going to have a muzzle velocity of about 1080 fps. That works out to about 104 ft lbs of muzzle energy, vs. 14.5 with a 6.5 grain Beeman Laser going 1000 fps.
That's not to say such power isn't deadly. Shoot safely.

An airgun in .177 only has 1/3 the energy of a .22 short
Now a .22 airgun is closer to a .22 short in energy and speed but the pellets weight is much lighter then the .22 bullet.
but a .22 LR is way more powerful because of its weight and velocity.

The speed is comparable to a low powered 22. However, the ammunition that the gun is capable of firing at those speeds is of at least equal importance. If it is designed for plastic BBs, a shot to the bare chest from 10 feet away will likely create a blood blister, or possibly tear the skin slightly. Stings like hell, but taking a gunshot to the chest looks cool.

If it fires copper BBs at that speed, they'll stick under the skin at the same range. It's a pain to dig them out, so have your little brother wear a sweater or two. Also, don't shoot him in the head on Friday the 13th at 1:13pm, as there is a very slim chance of doing serious damage to something important inside. Same goes for the groin. Remember, even if you die childless, you share a lot of the same DNA, so it's in your best interest to protect his bloodline.

On the other hand, if the gun can get a proper lead pellet up to those speeds, you can have some real fun. These will substantially dent stop signs. One of mine put two holes in a cat's head (one on the right at entry, one on the left at exit). Not that you should shoot cats, but it was in mid-leap towards an innocent bird. I actually like cats. But birds are better.

A .22, however, launches considerably more lead at a slightly higher speed. A bullet from said gun CAN and DOES kill people, if it impacts the person in the right spot (or is that "wrong spot").

Remember, a plastic BB can put your eye out. A bullet from a .22 can ricochet inside your skull, turning your brain into something yuckier. Metal BBs are in between the two.

They are slightly less powerful. Mainly because you are shooting a .177" pellet that is either lead or a new to the market PBA which is an aluminum alloy. They will take game to about 20 yards where as a 22lr will take small game out to 50 - 75 yards.

These are by no means TOY guns as some on here would call them. I seen a guy take a 80# hog with a Gamo Hunter Extreme using the PBA pellet.

Depends, i could fire nerf balls at 1000 feet per second and not break a balloon. But a .22 cal conical ball at 1000 fps will take rabbits skunks possum, fox prarie dog, ground hog, raccoon.....

1000 fps is very fast for an air gun. I don't believe it actually. The fastest air guns are usually about 800 fps. Note: 1000 fps is the speed of sound.

A 22 shoots about 1200 fps and has more mass in the bullet than an air gun, so it has maybe 4 times as much energy.

The .22 LR round has a standard velocty of about 1200 fps. , so if you have have an air gun capable of 1000+ fps, it is as good as the .22 LR round.
