I might be thinking this lady, although very desirable, is a lost cause and I quit trying because no one likes to continue getting slapped down day in and day out. A guy enjoys the chase, but he has to get some encouragement to make him hang in there.

Well, ill respond to as much of your question as I understand. If I'm that guy, I would have been out long ago. The 'game' takes two sides, its not very fun or productive to be the only one engaging in the chase. There has to be some level of affirmation from both sides.
People are quick to talk about how girls are the ones to get hurt, or the emotional ones. When I think just the opposite is true. Guys have to put themselves so far out, they risk looking like a fool, they risk getting rejected, and it requires an infinite amount of emotional energy. If a girl is not at least letting me in a little bit, I don't know why I'd be a friend let alone pursue something further.

she didnt like him from the beginning but she didnt want to lose a person who is taking care of her and showing her that she is special....so she didnt like him....and about the crying issue....most girls dont like the way guys try to make them laugh when they r crying....coz the guyz use the wrong way...
i had exactly the same situation with a guy...and his joke when im crying made me wana fight with him or get away

Don't wait for her everyday. Continue with your life. Its probably not met to be. If you see her again, talk to her about what you are feeling.
