Below is a link that shows you how to make a simple amplifier for an electric guitar. It uses the LM386 OpAmp chip and runs off a 9 V battery. You can either attach an 8 ohm speaker or use an output jack to another device.

go to radioshack. find the little amp kit using a LM-386 chip. schematic included, cost about two bucks...500mW/8 ohm and they sound good. higher level explonation see google "national LM-386" you can mail order that from vetco electronics in bellevue wa. they have a website and kits with a pc board.
