Combat Engineers do everything Infantry does except we have a specialty in breaching and building obsticles on the battle field useing explosives and anyhting else we need. In Iraq we mostly do route clearance these days but in the begining of the war we were clearing mine fields and blowing up weapons caches. In short the answer is yes we fight and we do it well. The first guy who answered has no clue what he is talking about

Damn straight they do! In the combat engineer MOS description it states "act as infantry when required". If you are in a sapper platoon you will be right there with a combat element and will see plenty of action. Especially in today's conflicts, engineers in Iraq or Afghanistan are damn busy and pretty popular too. They do a dangerous job quite well.

They are not supposed to, but will if they have to.

Their job is to build a bridge over an obstacle or clear a minefield while the Infantry, Armor and Field Artillery cover them.

They are called Combat Engineers because they build these bridges and minefield lanes while under fire.

For example, an Armor Brigade wants to attack a defensive position, the tanks move to a place to supress the enemy while the Combat Engineers move up to open up the minefield inbetween the tanks and enemy. Once the lane is open, then the tanks continue the attack.

Sappers do fight. Their primary jobs are to clear obstacles for the main forces. But to get to those obstacles, they have to be on the front lines. They do fight side by side with the infantry guys.

They are trained and tasked with doing construction and clearance under fire and would make decent infantrymen in a pinch, but due to their useful skills, don't expect them to be used as infantry nearly as much as the regular Infantry or even the Artillery.

There's also a more carpentry-oriented side to their work.

Look at the first word in the job description COMBAT, that should be the first indicator to ya.

They are not meant to, but they get sent to the front hot spots to build bridges, etc, and are often attacked while doing so, and thus fight back.

I would hope so!
These are the guys who put up bridges while the enemy is taking shots at them.
Valiant is the guy who can do this day-in day-out without returning fire until the task at hand is done!
