If you are planning to drive this car just on the drag strip, then they are just fine. BUT, if you plan to drive it on the street for any extended distance, then you better be ready for using a lot more gasoline. Also, your top speed will be greatly reduced. Sure, you will get to it a lot faster but you wont go nearly as fast.
Basically the 4:10 gears mean that the drive-shaft will turn 4.1 times for each 1 turn of the wheels. If you know the final output ratio of the transmission, you would multiply that times 4.10 to get the effective ratio of engine revolutions to tire revs.
The older vehicles that had 4:10 gears from the factory with direct (not overdrive) transmissions had a top speed in the range of 65-75 MPH, depending on the tire size. At 60 MPH, they sounded like an aircraft engine ready for takeoff.
Good luck with your decision.

If this is your everyday driving vehical, stay away from the 410's. You will lose gas mileage and wont be able to travel at freeway speeds for very long without causeing too much wear and tear on your tranny and engine. There are about 100 other things you can do to improve your acceleration that is better then gears. If you really want to change it up, go with 373's. Here is a list of things that you should do before you start to change up your gears. Cold air intake, full exhaust system (from the headers all the way to the catback to the tips), underdrive pulleys, tuner or chip, drag radial tires for the rear wheels, spark plugs, fuel injectors. Once you have accomplished all of this, if you still want to add more then take the money you would have spent on gears and stick it in a savings account and add more when ever you can until you have enough for a supercharger. You can get an awesome vortech system for your 01 gt stang, professionally installed for around $3500-$4500. Gears are good for track cars, but for your every day driving vehical there is just too many other options out there to mess with them. Like I said though, if you have your heart set on getting different gears, then stay in the 3's at least.

4:10's are actually recommended in the cobra. I gained a lot of acceleration off the line in my 01 cobra but lost a lot of top end. Plus your gas mileage will drop pretty good. For the GT i'm sure the same rules apply but i wouldn't recommend the 4:10's i would stick in the 3:73's for an 01 GT...less top end loss and better gear quality on the exchange from 1st through 5th. A lot of people it's just there preference so it's really up to you my friend

In short, it will use gas really quick and keep you off the freeways (the Rev's will be too high to keep up with the traffic for any length of time). Unless you race - A LOT - the only good feeling is acceleration. But then, you can't go very far. In the car clubs I've been in, those who moved to a 4.10 on their street cars shortly moved back into the 3's. Most were happy around the 3:40 to 3:50 ratios.

RE:
4:10 gears?
I am planning on getting 4:10's in my stock 01 mustang gt. I need an explanation of what they will do. How much of a difference is there from stock? Is there better throttle response? Please tell me everything

well 4.10 gears will help with acceleration off the line but less in cruising speeds a stock mustangs gears are probably like 3:43 or 3:08 the new gears will mean lots more throw you into the seat power but far less gas milage and more engine rpms

they will add a thousand rpm's to your cruising speed and change your overall gearing from 2.6 to 3.3 , (just multiply your O.D. ratio times 4:1)
based on a stock gearing of 2.75

With stock sized (245/45/R17) tires. At 6000 RPM in 4th gear with 4.10's you'll be going 108 MPH. With 3.73's you'll be going 119 MPH. If you're drag racing , it looks like you'll you have to nail 5th before you hit the traps. With 3.55's you should be doing about 125 MPH at 6000 RPM in 4th.
