Just want to know what places you'd recomend living @near the base b.c. my spouse will hopefully get his hardship tour to sinai request approved. It's not a cultural or language issue for me b.c. my husband speaks arabic anyway (is egyptian) and is in the U.S. ARMY as a black hawk mechanic...he'll help find a place for me to be set up in w/ our kids, but I'd like to know if anyone who's not egyptian (i'm american) would recomend an area around there/things to do. His opinions of what are acceptable and nice differ from mine.

Why on gods green earth would you want to go on a tour without sponsorship...you wont get any help, no benefits,no medical, you wont be recognized, your kids wont get medical, every expense will come out of your pocket...im sorry but your crazy to go somewhere if you arent sponsored....if your husband's command said no, then if you go and stay, he can get into trouble. he may have to live in the barracks, which means he will NOT get any money to help pay rent on a place in town. you will NOT be able to access base facilities: medical, dental, even shopping. you will NOT be protected by the US government, so if you get into any kind of trouble over there your screwed

I have not been to Egypt, but here is a word of warning. I don't know if Egypt is the same, but we had a guy try that here in Turkey. Three times they found a decent place to live, negotiated a lease, only to have the price go from about 2000.00 Ytl to 3500.00 Ytl as soon as he was identifed as US military in the applications process. The same thing happened last year here also when a guy who's wife was Turkish tried to do the same thing. They often do not understand Command Sponsorship and assume that since you are military, you have military money to burn. In my experience in general, you probably will not find a place that meets a US citizen (not government) standard that falls in an acceptable price range.

Also, we had another Soldier here that was married to a Turk who owned her own home, but he was not allowed to live there by the chain of command.

There are reasons the US doesn't want family members in a location. Some of it has to do with threat, but a lot has to do with life support. For example, where I am, there is not a good location for schools or hospital care that meet what an American would expect. Even water and not to mention visa issues. Think hard about this.

I would just stay where you are. Yes, it is hard to be away but it's better than forking out an *** load of your own money. My husband is going to Bahrain and we were thinking of moving back to Hawaii but the Navy will not move us till he comes back state side. I will just suck it up and stay where I am instead of having to pay to move all my household goods, 2 cars and airline tickets for 3 people. Its part of the military life, you and your husband are going to be seperated one time or another. You can't always go with him. Just stay where your at at least the kids are already comfortable.
