I'm thinking of getting either one from Mario Batali, Giada DeLaurentis, or the old school Momma Leone' one. Which one is best?

Another, better option: "Silver Spoon", English language edition of "Il Cucchiaio d'Argento", the most important and comprehensive book about Italian cookery published in Italy during 20th Century. So, not only a great book by itself, but also straight from Italy.

If you want real Italian I recommend Marcella Hazan, Giuliano Bugialli, or Biba Caggiano. Mario Batali's food it definitely authentic but fancied up a bit. If you want nuts and bolts kind of recipes go to the Silver Spoon. These are recipes without flourish and meant for the new bride or novice cook. They are simple and easy but authentic.

Giada DeLaurentis is certainly Italian but I think her food is a adapted to a healthy "California Cuisine" consumer. Not bad just not something you would find in a Roman Trattoria.

Mario Batalli is good, no question there. I find that I really enjoy Lidia Matticchio Bastianich's books as well as TV shows on Public Broadcasting. I miss Mario as his shows are not being broadcast right now. I have taped them for reference.

It really is not all about the recipes, it about technique and the flavours delivered to the table.

One author you didn't mention is Marcella Hazan . Her "Essential's of Classic Italian Cooking" is wonderful and very comprehensive.

Gee lets see. I didn't know Italians cooked any differently than anyone else. Their skin comes in all different colors, and maybe you should know enough about Italian food by living in this country by now, that all you have to do is find someone italian and ask them. "Very Attractive" too.
