you can find a used Ruger mini 14 for about 450. They are pretty good as long as you only use brass cased ammo. If you want to shoot alot of russian ammo you need a russian gun like an AKS.
You could also go pistol caliber like a Berrettta storm in 9mm.
With the price of ammo lately I would look pretty hard at a Ruger 10/22 in .22 rimfire. They will punch holes in paper just as well, You can put anytype of ddodad or gizmo you want on it. And it fires cheap 22lr rimfire ammo. Do a search at Cabelas on 10/22.

Go with the 12ga as it is less likely to over penetrate and go through walls. However for vehicle borne threats such as drive by shootings or SHTF/bugout scenario's it is best to use a good reliable semi-auto rifle chambered in a caliber power full enough to penetrate through a car door. You should also have a pistol for home D as well because not all situations call for a shotgun. As for the body armour, i wouldn't worry to much about that unless you have serious enemies as your average burglar isn't going to have body armour. If they do shot for their head or their manhood after a dose of buck or slug from the shotgun to the chest to stun them. A note about the rifle: As with any firearm once you pull the trigger and the round leaves the barrel there is no taking it back. You and you alone are fully responsible for ware it goes and what ever damage it does to person or property on the way. Its your baby! However with a rifle unlike most shotguns or hand guns the round can go very far and penetrate a lot of stuff before it gets stopped so please be attentive to safety and accuracy

Around here you can buy a new ak-47 for under $300. They are highly reliable and mine works great for deer hunting. Ammo is also very low cost.

in that price rance you will probably need to find an individual selling a gun--if you want quality that is. I have a semi auto .,270 but it was well over that price range. Try to find a good used Remington-Husqvarna-or maybe even an older Weatherby.

SKS because most good AK's go for $450 and above
unless you can wait and save money to buy it.
