As stated, you need a compact flash card. You will not be able to see the image on the screen before you take it, only review it after you snap. You will compose your image the old fashioned way, through the viewfinder. Go get your CF card ASAP. You will need your camera manual again and again and again, so keep it handy and plan to do a lot of reading, studying, and experimenting. You have a great camera, but it will take some effort on your part to learn how to use it. Have fun!

The screen on the back is for pic review and to access the main menu. You will take every picture through the viewfinder.

You do not own a toy. You now own a CAMERA! And its a damn good one!

You must purchase a CF memory card. 2 GB in size will do..

I wish you accepted e-mails, we could discus any ?'s you have about this camera. I own a NIKON D50 and its a real treat to own a DSLR.

Opps! I gave her the answer for a NIKON, my bad...

I correct.

I like milepost's answer except about the SD card. I own a Canon digital Rebel (not xt) and it takes the CF card as described above. I assume yours does also.

You need to purchae a CF memory card [not a SD one] with at least 1 gig of space. Unless you are planning to shoot multiple hi-speed images, choose a normal speed memory card.

Good luck!
