She and her mother are cut from the same nearly worthless cloth. For them to say that around you proves it.

Well, obviously, the niece doesn't know that B&N also carries DVDs and CDs...NOT just books.
I agree...reading is an escape...a chance to get away from stress and a chance to wind down. Reading is not "for dorks". Reading also helps people improve spelling, grammar and speech patterns. I love to read...whenever I'm just relaxing, I can practically guarantee you that I have a book in my hands and that my eyes are fixed on it.
Your niece sounds spoiled and not at all grateful to have received any gift. You would think that she could have shown some appreciation. At the very least, she should have realized that the gift of reading is a gift definitely worth giving...and even more valuble to have.
Another user here mentioned that forced reading in school turned many kids away from books. I went to school myself and while I was subjected to "forced" reading, some of the books we had to read opened up new worlds to me. No, I didn't like them all, but there are two books that I still own copies of today..."All Quiet on the Western Front" and "Where the Red Fern Grows". I read those in junior high school...and I loved them...I still love them 25 years later.

I agree with you, reading is a wonderful thing to do!. When you read, you get to visit many places and learn about some interesting people. I've always loved to read and my parents gave me many books as a child. When my kids were younger I always read to them and bought them books as well.. I think parents have a big influence in encouraging their kids reading habits.I know some parents who take their kids to the library and encourage them to get a library card even before they can read the words, but they can look at the pictures. If parents put no value in reading, many times the kids won't either. I know adults who have said that they haven't read a book in over 20 years. These days there are many distractions and some adults and kids alike don't know, or like, to entertain themselves in this way. To many, if you are not moving or doing something all of the time then it's "boring". You did a great thing by giving the gift certificate. They were rude and ungrateful and revealed their own ignorance.. Plus, Barnes and Noble has DVD"s and many other items besides just books.

...your niece has a lot to learn...she's rude and doesn't know how to accept a gift...as for your question...some people don't like to read because it's difficult for them, and its embarrassing to admit...so they feel better pretending that they're not interested rather than admitting that its hard for them...or else they might be lazy and expect someone else to create a film of the story so that all they have to do is look at a screen...also some people may not have developed an appreciation for written words because they came from an environment where books weren't valued...this might be the case with your niece...with her mothers example, its no wonder that she has a bad attitude about reading...you could have pointed out to her that if she spent more time reading, she might then be smart enough to realize that Barnes and Noble also sell movies and music...

The quandary that lots of parents find themselves in is they don't really have the full time to search for the right eBook s and understanding design with which to show their children but with this program https://tr.im/UG9lQ , Children Learning Reading this problem is arrived at a end.
Children Learning Reading is really detailed, and your youngster could have number problems assimilating the instructions as the instructions are well-designed. Since the system is based on phonetics, the training process is gradual.
In Children Learning Reading program the instructions are special and can not be present in different understanding methods.

Well, not EVERYONE hates reading, especially if it's an IM or a text message on their cell phone! But to sit down and read a book requires some imagination and the ability to focus attention for more than a few minutes, and I'm afraid that the way society is developing, it is catering to those who rather take their information in small bites and creating a whole segment of the population who are unable to focus past a few sentences.
Your neice is a rude little git, and her mother *obviously* has never read "Miss Manners Guide To Rearing Perfect Children"! I think I would have been tempted to say, "Oh, so sorry the gift didn't suit and that I offended you! Here, let me take it back . . ." And then I would have gone and bought myself a book!
I got three books for Christmas and I can't wait to dive into them!

I don't know, but I love to read as well. We live in a video game/TV society, where many people don't want to have to think for themselves anymore. When you read, you have to use your imagination, some people's imaginations are stunted because all they ever do is watch TV, where all the imagining has already been done for you. Something to think about though, is that some people say they don't like to read when really, they have trouble reading. Since this girl's mom obviously never stressed reading skills with her, she may have some difficulties, if not with reading, then with her comprehension. Either way, books rock and I'm not giving them up for anyone!

I'm a former teacher, and I've observed that if kids think reading is boring, it's because they can't read. People who have never really learned to read well struggle through every line. They can't get into the story because they are so busy decoding every word and trying to make sense of the sentences. Your niece's mother has never learned either, so she never encouraged her daughter when she was young by giving her good books and talking about books as though they were something wonderful. A lot of parents read with their tiny children, but once they are past the picture book stage, they don't go on to "real books". How unfortunate! I love to read and it has helped me continue learning all through life. How much this girl is missing!

Only the immature or those who are in some way mentally disabled hate reading. Many kids have short attention spans and want immediate gratification, but unless they are dimwits, most of them grow out of that in time.
Don't give books to those who can't appreciate them - books deserve a better fate. Merry Christmas!

Me too. I prefer to read a good book and I'm not interested in partying either.
The kid was really rude to you. So stop giving them presents, so they'll learn to appreaciate them. The kid obviously is vey ignorant and uneducated.
Reading books is for people with certain level of education and good manners.
Only people with a good level of education enjoys reading books, because they surely know how to appreciate the value of them and how books are going to expand their vocabulary.
