I'm interested to see the opinion from people in R&S, please don't report this question, you know...I want to see whether religion/atheism can be a huge factor in your own opinion =D

Please state your reasons clearly, thank you.

Pro the good things of globalization. Con the bad things about globalization.

This is far from a simple topic.

I'm against political globalization. The larger the group (neighborhood, city, state, country, etc.) that is responsible, the more corruption occurs, and the more waste, and the more theft.

Look at the welfare system - if every ten families were responsible for helping each other, there would be no welfare fraud - but as it is, if your neighbor is cheating the government, nobody on the block does anything about it, even though it eventually comes out of all our pockets.

I believe firmly that the only way to promote productivity (with everybody having an incentive to pull their own weight) is through capitalism and competition, both of which would be stifled by political globalization.

Edit - Scratch my irrelevant answer, and copy/paste Chris'.

PROS:

Productivity grows more quickly when countries produce goods and services in which they have a comparative advantage. Living standards can go up faster.

Global competition and cheap imports keep a lid on prices, so inflation is less likely to disrupt economy.

An open economy stimulates innovation with fresh ideas from abroad.

Free capital flows give the U.S. access to foreign investment and keep interest rates low.

CONS:

Millions of Americans have lost jobs due to imports or production jobs abroad. Most find new jobs that pay less.

Millions of others will lose their jobs, especially at those companies operating under competitive pressure.

Workers face pay cut from employers, which often threaten to export jobs.

A note to Neil.. The only real estate taken by Americans in the last 6 wars we have fought was enough to bury our soldiers in Normandy France. SO much for American "Imperialism"

I detest political borders... through some quirk of fate one is born on this side of a line and is therefore entitled to live a better life than someone born on the other side of that line?

It's a very complex issue with many positives and negatives.

In my job, I deal with one of the negatives: the proliferation of invasive species. This could be helped a great deal through doing thorough inspections at the border to prevent non-native species from establishing in the first place.

P.S. why the thumbs down? Do you like pernicious weeds? Do you think the destruction of our forests and crops by invasive pests is a good idea?

Depends on how it is done. Current practices are just global Westernization, which I deplore. The assumption is that economic success means a better system, without accounting for the Imperialism that upholds economies like the US. There has to be consideration of all traditions and practices before blanket "progress" is decided upon by the corporations.

Being born in the sixties, my natural heroes were Astronauts, each and every one of them from that era, including cosmonauts (to the man), became internationalists (globalists if you will) once they saw the earth without political borders, in it's natural state. they all began to see it as a spaceship, a single unit, every rat on that ship has a common fate.

I agree with them.

Globalism is evil. The tower of Babel was thrown down by God. I object to globalism and I think independent nations should stay independent.

The Bible says that certain men will create a one world government, a one world economic system, and a one world religion. All three will be headed by antichrist for a very brief time.

After that Jesus will return and throw it down.

pro trade, con single worldwide economy

it a country isn't self sufficient, then any big downturn effects the whole world, and there is no way to make it through the hard time via trade with someone who is doing better.
