1st string open? what does this mean? fingering help please?

Here is a perfect example, the E chord. Three strings are being held down, three are open. You are playing all six strings.

Play the E string (the thinnest, highest sounding one) without touching it with the left hand.

You pluck that E string, but you don't put a finger on it.

i believe it means that you don't put your finger on the top chord. If I'm wrong, I'm sorry..lol
