wraeth, sorry to bust your bubble, but every man to hold the 5-star General position was in that same boat with Washington.
I say LTG Harold Moore. You might know him as the man Mel Gibson portrayed in We Were Soldiers

Ulysses S. Grant.
He was the ONLY general in the Civil War to grasp the whole, vast, strategic importance of what he was doing, and the only one with the determination and moral courage to get the job done.
He directed million man armies, supplied them, trained them and trasported them over great distances. He fought a war and juggled the politics and economics of war as well.
He was also magnaninous in victory and fully realized that the nation must heal as quickly as possible. He did not seek revenge.
By his efforts, a Great Nation was preserved, which then went on to become the most powerful country the world has ever seen since the beginning of time.
PS: This has nothing to do with his Presidency. He was not a good President.
PPS: He was also an outstanding writer.

Hannibal of Carthage is my favorite.
Although he eventually lost in the end, he was famous for encircling dreaded Roman formations often bigger than his own forces, then destroying them in battle after battle with minimal losses. The Romans weren't a poorly equipped and ill-disciplined army relying on sheer numbers, either. Hannibal was a tactical genius.
I try to give Patton some consideration, but the man was somewhat... insane. Only his abilities prevented him from losing his job.

General of the Armies John J. Pershing. Highest ranking soldier in US History. Washington actually had to be promoted 150 years post humously just so he would remain the highest.
Imthevoice..
Hate to burst your bubble but 5 star Generals are General of the Army. General of the Air Force, or Admiral of the Navy. General Pershing was General of the Armies, see the difference there bud? There was actually a 6 star rank designed for him but was never approved as he was the only person ever to hold that rank while in the service. General Washington was actually a LtGen. He was promoted after Pershing was promoted just so that in the eyes of the American Public, he would remain the highest. Read up on your history. General Pershing is the Highest ranking General in American history.

The ones I like are Alexander the Great, Cesar and Rommel. (To the guy that admired Clinton, we lost several pilots including one in an F-117 stealth fighter. This war you admire so much was one where there was no threat to our Country, we had no interest in the area and the Serbs were not training terrorist groups.)

Colonel Mustard with Sanders a close second and Captain Crunch in third. General Mills would be in the top five with General Electric and Motors at least in the top 10%.

William Jefferson Clinton...who won an entire war (Kosovo) without losing a single one of his own troops in combat. NO OTHER commander in ALL of history ever did that before, or since. None is apt to ever repeat it. Alexander The Great, Ceasar, Patton, Lee, Khan, etc, all pale in comparison.
