I am five foot two and weigh 148 lbs. My waist is a 29.5 and hips are a 43. All the BMI calculaters and waist to hip ratios say i am healthy, but my recruiter says I am too fat to even take the arms test even though I can pass it. My BMI is a 27.1 according to online and hand done calculations and my waist to hip ratio is .67. My recruiter says my BMI is a 38. Is this possible? what can I do because I really want to join the military and this is the only thing stopping me.

It's possible he calculated it wrong... but unfortunately, 27.1 is considered to be in the overweight range anyway. It's also possible he was referring to another body mass/fat system in use by the services, but mistakenly said "BMI".

No worries, though. Losing weight is the easiest thing you could do to get into the military - at least you're not being held back by poor aptitude test results or lack teamwork skills and life experience to get by.

I recommend you gain a bit more muscle to increase your required calorie intake, then go running. I know it can be a nuisance when you can pass the fitness tests but are held back on a technicality, but there's nothing you can do but drop some kilos.

I think he probably calculated your body fat percentage which is where the 38 figure comes from. This is not the same as your BMI. I believe to join the military, your body fat needs to be 34% or less.

BMI is a stupid way to measure overweight-ness IMO, due to the fact muscle is more dense than fat, but that is why they do the arms test etc. I would recommend just getting into a better shape so you fit the requirements.

forget about all of the bmi calculators. use a navy standard body fat calculator, MEPS uses that to calculate body fat, and ONLY that... so NO calipers, no water tests.. just the navy body fat calculations. . it measures body fat with measurements of neck, waist, hip(if female), and height.
i think CURRENTLY all of the branches are allowing females to swear in at 36%... i know for sure that as of now, the navy and army allows 36%.

if your're over the body fat percent, exercise, exercise, exercise!

here's a calculator- http://www.he.net/~zone/prothd2.html

You didn't say which service. This is the Army regulation with the instructions for computing BMI -- assuming you're female, and using 13" for neck circumference since you didn't mention it, the table puts you at 36: http://usmilitary.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.usapa.army.mil/pdffiles/r600%5F9.pdf

The recruiter is using the same tools they will use the entire time you are in the Army. So if you're failing his, you'll fail them all.
