Id start the one to Mr Thomas as Dear Mr Thomas or probably Dear Justice Thomas, then lead in with refreshing your introduction and your association with him, so he knows who you are and why your writting and then develope the body of the letter with the information on your school year with a sincere ,but slightly formalised closing..Must have been great meeting him, He's a great man , and a real asset to the court..in time I expect he'll be even greater than Marshall was. Thomas and Scalia are about the only two seated whose decisions I usually agree with.

1. See below.
2. Send a card with a little note. Follow it with a letter in a week or so.

Writing a letter: What you have is writer's block. It basically is a conflict between the judgment side and the creative side. The way to get around it is to not think (judge the writing) but just write. Just let the thoughts and words flow. Don't edit, don't correct spelling, do check grammar. After you are done, set it aside and later edit it. And then later, organize it and delete things you don't want to send. Sometimes, after the edit, printing it out, and then cutting the paragraphs apart and organizing them on the floor can really help (story board technique).

Good luck.

Dear _______

Very sorry to hear about your sad loss..... _____ was a very kind/special funny man/woman. I know that nothing I can say can heal the pain that you must be feeling but I am praying for you (If they are not religious leave the last bit out - or change it for - You are in my thoughts)

then continue as normal.
