Not quite sure about the navy but with the army you just say this is what i want and if i cant get it then ill join another service that will give it to me. JUST MAKE SURE ITS IN YOUR CONTRACT!!!! They can promise you this and that but if its not in black and white then dont plan on getting it. This way if you end up not getting what you wanted then they have to let you get out if you so choose.

What will happen is when you graduate from your schooling, your class will be given a set of units that your classmates will be assigned to (Not at boot camp, not at the recruiter's office). Typically, they will give people a choice of orders based on class standing.
So, the truth is nobody really knows where you'll end up until you graduate from your training and are ready for fleet assignment. You gotta remember, you may be in school for a year or so, the navy has no idea what assignments will be open that long out. You may also be limited as to where you can be assigned, based on your rating and your particulal specialty within that rating, (if the gear you are trained on cannot be found in Japan, forget it, you'll never get there).

Yes, and no.
You get to fill out what is called a 'dream sheet'. On it, you list the general locations (SE Asia, Europe, etc), and countries (Japan, etc), and states/bases, you would like to be sent to.
The service then sends you where they feel they need you, regardless of whether you want to be there or not. In some cases, those who make assignment decisions take perverse pleasure in sending people far from where they wish to go. I asked for: South East Asia, Germany, Viet Nam, and California...and got sent to Texas, and Japan. Consider using reverse logic. If you want to end up in Germany, ask for Japan, and North Carolina. You may get dumped in between...in Germany.
The needs of the service override any desire on the part of the service person. In the Navy, you could get stuck on a nuke sub, and spend 4 years sitting in one spot on the floor of the ocean without moving...or you may get sent to Japan as you wish. Try it, and see.

admittedly it was a long time ago (1955). when we completed -A- school. we were giving by class ranking our choice of places from a list with a number of billets equal to the number of grads. also when i went in i was guaranteed, as an enlistee in the aviation branch, airman school, where upon completion we were allowed to choose which -A- school we wanted to go to. when i finished -A- school i had been in the navy nearly 1 yr. also each time you transfer you are given a chance to select three places you would prefer. some times you Will get your choice at least the area of choice. needs of the service always have priority.

No you have little to no say in where you end up. For the most part you go where they need you. In boot camp, you fill out a "dream sheet" but your prefrences fo duty stations won't matter, that's why they call it a dream sheet, best of luck though.

YOU can fill out a "dream sheet" but, it boils down to needs of the service!
In other words, You can request Hawaii,Japan, Europe, etc...
if there is an urgent need for your MOS/rating in say,Greenland, Thats where you will be sent!
sometimes, its just a matter of luck or timing!

They will tell you that you can get duty station of choice and you will be sent there for your first duty station. The only thing is that only guarantees that you will be sent there for one year or until the navy needs you elsewhere.I had Ft. Benning as my duty station of choice but when I went ranger there was no room for me at 3rd Bat. so I was sent to 1st Bat. at Ft. Stewart so there are no guarantees really.

Depending on the skills you train with you can get some greater leverage. But I hear the navy is more apt to do that then another branch

You can apply for orders but they send you were they see fit. We were in San Diego and my husband was up for orders, he applied time and time again and the detailer said we are going to WA, no exceptions because the command was a high priority to fill.

Not much. If you happen to like San Diego or Norfolk, your chances of getting station of choice are better.
