It depends on how much walking you want to do. You can start at Hollywood and Highland or maybe La Brea and then walk up and down the street and see the "stars." Most of the stuff you'll want to see is right there in those few blocks.

Some of the stars are on the side streets that cross Hollywood Blvd though, so you might want to get a star map if you are looking for one in particular.

What you're saying is just limited in the Hollywood area. If Hollywood is your only destination, you can walk along the Hollywood Blvd. You will pretty much see what you have expected. Besides that, you can also drive to the "Sunset Strip" and have a short walk along the Sunset Blvd and look around the fancy stores and restaurants. If lucky, you may be able to spot a Hollywood star or two.

Go to the top of the hill where people look at the hollywood sign and talk about Christmas.

Start on Hollywood Blvd and work your way down through Sunset, Santa Monica, Melrose, etc etc... you will see more than you imagined. Ignore the homeless people; they will scare you.

If you can, start at the metro line in the valley and get off at the appropriate stops.
