Got my daughter a little Power wheels quad... Its says the battery needs to be charged for 18 hrs! before first use. What will happen if I charge it for a few hours, then try it?? Will it ruin anything? or just not work well?

Those batterys develop a cycle-memory based upon their initial charge. It'll have a hard time ever fully charging if you only put in a shallow initial charge.
So it's best to go the full 18 hours no matter how long it seems-you'll thank yourself in the long run.

Charge it the full 18 hours...and make sure it is completely discharged before recharging.
I work in a warehouse..we have the same problem with forklift batteries.
If not fully charged or fully discharged they develop(memory)it will shorten the battery life and the battery will begin to go dead too soon.
Several cam corder batteries have also bitten the dust for the same reason

It will probably run a VERY short time.
The initial charge on ANY rechargeable battery, this is probably Nicad or NiMh is always longer than subsequent charging as you ar charging from a full flat state, not a "low low to use" state.

The initial charge won't last long and you will have to charge the battery more often in the future. This will also cause the battery to wear down more and shorten its lifespan.

We charged it 18 hours but it doesn't seem to have the power it did last fall.
