A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection that affects any part of the urinary tract. Although urine contains a variety of fluids, salts, and waste products, it usually does not have bacteria in it. When bacteria get into the bladder or kidney and multiply in the urine, they cause a UTI. The most common type of UTI is a bladder infection which is also often called cystitis.

Most uncomplicated UTIs can be treated with oral antibiotics such as Ttrimethoprim, Cephalosporins, Nitrofurantoin, or a Fluoroquinolone (e.g. Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin). Whilst co-trimoxazole was previously internationally used (and continues to be used in the U.S.), the additional of the sulphonamide gave little additional benefit compared to the trimethoprim component alone, but was responsible for its both high incidence of mild allergic reactions and rare but serious complications.

If the patient has symptoms consistent with pyelonephritis, intravenous antibiotics may be indicated.-

1) Please say that you're not really a doctor & asking this question

2) The "proper" antibiotic depends on the causative bacteria.
For an inpatient, a urine culture would be done. For an outpatient, it's assumed to be E. Coli, the most common bug.

3) For E. coli, Bactrim DS (TMP/SMZ) and ciprofloxacin are frequently used.

Male or female? If male, depends on the bug (might be an STD). Doxycycline would be the best, unless your over 35, in which case Cipro would be better.
Female-Cipro, Bactrim, or Macrobid.
Important: Ask about drug allergies first (Sulfa in Bactrim)
