People were obsessed about celebrities much more in the 1940's and 50's than at any time since. I mean 3/4 of women in UK copied the Queen, her style, her clothes, her hair. her string of pearls. Even the kids were named Philip, Elizabeth Margaret etc The other 1/4 copied Marilyn Monroe or Ginger Rodgers or some other Hollywood star. Truthfully this is what the fashion pundits wanted to get back to, a mass of consumers blindly aping celebrities and spending lots of money on trendy fashion accessories. Some men have football as a virtual religion, imagine a space alien watching a football match, he would interpret it as a way out religious ritual. In the 1960's and 70's we rejected the big celebrity lie and the cons of the fashion industry and tried to find our own personal style, what suited us individually. No, the celebrity cult is not a religion, it is a big ploy from the marketeers of overpriced fashion goods to try and get you to spend more of your money. Only the young and stupid fall for that one.
The world is full of people who do nothing but good, but they don't do it for the fame, People who help others and often give time and energy away for free simply cannot compete in the commercial con trick that is the celebrity cult and more importantly, they would not want to.

Oh come on, it has been going on for centuries, Gladiatorial, emperors, charioteers etc.
It was crazy then as it is now, I disagree regarding those people that help others etc, they are never ignored maybe they do not want the limelight like pop idols but we all know what they do and thank them in many ways.

Any religion that is created by mankind is a creation of the devil. The Lord sent down the religions and that is why no one can be a religion and no religion can be anyone.
Your own question shows how much error there is in that.

No. I have thought about the same issue.
It's even more repugnant when this "Celebrityism" is in the church.
