It's early. And I have a cold. Will not go to family's house to spread my germs all over. So for the moment, I'm home alone.

Allow me to borrow the words of Jimmy Buffet who comes up with this fabulous excuse for having a drink in the middle of the morning: 'I guess it must be 5 o'clock somewhere'.

Y'see, just 'cause it's Christmas day right here and right now, doesn't mean to say it is still Christmas day on the other side of the planet. Remember how the new millennium dawned? It sparked off somewhere in the Pacific, and over a period of 24 hours, spread round the globe. Something to do with the earth being round and spinning on its axis, but all that scientific stuff is giving me a headache.

Anyway, may I raise a glass of (rather good) Cabernet Sauvignon to EVERYONE who has had to work on Christmas day. We salute you!

Why would it be closed? It's not like the internet in itself is a business nor does everyone on the internet celebrate Christmas.

For the same reason it's "open" during Ramadan, Rosh Hashana, Beltaine, and all sorts of other holidays: it's part of the world's critical infrastructure. Do you expect phone, water, and electric services to shut down for Christmas?

The Internet is a public utility like water gas, electricity, phone and television. Would you want your electricity turned off for Christmas? I think not.
