Not long ago, I was teaching in a university in central China and my school boss asked me if I liked to go to hotels. I said not really since hotels tend to be expensive and hostels are just as comfortable. Well, she asked me not to go to the hotels downtown since many students from our school were working in the downtown hotels as hookers in the evening, so that they could buy expensive cell phones and clothing. I was a little shocked by her directness! 58 years of communism can not stop 5,000 years (or is it 8,000?) of Chinese culture! Have a heart and remember that none of these girls or boys wants to be a hooker! Social pressure, gambling debts, drug addiction, prostitution as a form of suicide, and sick loved ones are common throughout the world!
