I have a Remington model 700 Police short action in .308 with a 26 inch barrel. I dont take long shots and i dont plan on doing so. Im wanting to shorten my barrel. how short can i go? Personal experience is a plus when answering. Im not gonna shoot a bullet heavier than 168gr. I am shooting 150gr now but am thinking about going to 168gr. Any length and load data will be appreciated. I am wanting it to be a lil shorter and lighter.

As a owner of both Remington Police 308 models, the 26" and the 20" LTR (Light Tactical Rifle) I need to ask why do you want a shorter barrel. Both of mine are extremely accurate but they have different purposes. The true benefit of the LTR is the ability to manuver in brush or timber. I use it when I'm hunting where I will be walking long distances because it does weigh significantly less, or when the terrain benefits the shorter barrel. Otherwise I will use the 26" barrel just for the benefit of the additional weight to help me be as steady as possible. If you just have to have the shorter barrel, then sell your Police and buy a LTR. You will be happy and you won't take the chance of ruining a wonderful rifle. Good luck and take a kid shooting, they are the next generation of hunters

I really wouldn't want to go any shorter than 22", 20" would be the bare minimum for a .308 that I would take. There are quite a few rifles that have a 20" barrel, such as Savage's, and seem to be quite accuracte. I wouldn't even shorten the barrel on your Remington seeing how expensive those are. The only reason I'd take any barrel under 20" is if it were in a compact rifle (such as the Ruger M77) which I just got today!

You have nothing to gain by shortening the barrel on your Remington.* You will lose very little if any weight, and decrease the value of your rifle by shortening the barrel, and velocity.* Please reconsider what you are about to do.* If you still want a shorter barrel, then buy a separate barrel for it & have it put on the rifle.* I would not do it.*

Don't modify your barrel. More people daydream about owning a 700 Police than can actually muster up the cash (especially when you have an old lady and kids). Save up for another rifle (like the Savage). Auburnfo... is dead on. Don't do it.

To get it done right would cost you more than just selling it and buying one setup like you like. Welcome to the world of guns. That's what we all do. Each gun you own you will learn a little more about what you like and dont like.

I would not shorten it to anymore that 20" at most.
