a) if that 0.000742 is in joules then it would be 742microjoules because micro would stand for 10^-6 (one millionth in other words)

b) In this case, mega is 10^6. Firstly, 5.84x10^9g is the same as 5840000000g. So if it is going to be measured in megagrammes, it would be 5840Mg.

I answered a question like this very recently.

The principle is to use a conversion factor, such that the thing on top is worth the same as the thing on the bottom, and the conversion takes you out of the units you don't want into the units you do want.

Example: 0.000742 Joule x 10^6 microjoule/1 Joule = 7.42 x 10^2 microjoule

a. 742μJ Just move 6 decimals to the right, and that's how many "micro" or μ whatevers you have.

b. 5,840 Mg Just move 6 decimals to the left to go from gram to mega-gram.

a)
1μJ = 10^-6J
so
0.000742J = 7.42x10^-4J = 7.42x10^2x10^-6J = 742J

b)
1Mg = 10^6g
so
5.84x10^9g = 5.84x10^3x10^6g = 5840Mg
