plug it in, turn it on, and leave it alone.

it can take up to 4 hours for the lava to get melted... but normal is around 45 minutes.

with the first few globs going at the 20 min mark.

don't shake it up once it gets melted. that is bad to do.

just wait and be patient.

How cool! Lava lamps came into style first in the 1970's when I was in high school, but I never got one. It does take a few hours for the lava lamp to start working. Just plug it in and leave it alone for a while. Hmm, wonder when the rain lamps will come back in style now..........

The first two answers are right. Lava lamps need to be used with a traditional light bulb. Compact flourescents don't produce enough heat.

the lamp needs to heat up...the 'lava' is just wax. it's 'da bomb effect at night, enjoy! its very cool.
