I use a casserole dish quite often because then I can surround the chicken with potatoes and carrots and do it all in one dish. You don't want to use anything too shallow because of all the grease, it will make a mess in your oven. Even an oven proof pot will work, it really doesn't matter.

Just put it on a small cookie sheet and wrap it in foil. Remove the foil the last 10 min to brown it.

You could set it on a large enough piece of foil to be able to fold it up over the top, then set is on a cookie sheet.

You can wrap in foil...double or triple layer...
You can use a pie pan, pyrex dish, casserole dish...anything that may hold the whole chicken...
