My bf bought me an 8wk old Yorkie for Xmas this past Sat and gave her to me on Sun night. She was fine all night but the next day I noticed the following: she had vommitted a few times, she was always asleep and barely had energy to hold herself up. I forcefully gave her Nutri-Stat before I left for work that night and she seemed fine when I left. An hour later, her condition worsened. My bf's sister rushed her to an after-hours emergency vet who said she had a small parasite. I asked the doctor if it we did something to cause it and she said that since it had only been two days since we've had her, the puppy was most likely already infected when we bought her from the pet store. Is this true? The pet store advised my bf (sat when he purchased her) that he had until wednesday (since tues was christmas) to get her checked out by a vet. Since we are within that timeline, is there anything I can do to get them to rectify this situation?Like reimburse me for the $1000 vet bill?HELP!

I did not leave her home alone. I left her with my bf's sister who has had lots of experience with dogs which is why she rushed her to the hospital. She has been supervised by someone since she was brought home so please don't make the assumption that we are irresponsible.

By the way, he bought the dog on Sat afternoon and she was already sick by Mon morning-that is less than the 3-7 days that you are talking about!

petstore puppies are from puppy mills (search Y!A for why puppy mills are so bad and the pups usually diseased)

Parasites can also come from eating feces or drinking open sources of water..so i dont think it can be proven 100% unfortunately...

but be prepared, to prevent these high emergency vet bills, take your puppy to a vet for a check up, vaccines and deworming ASAP.

Most places will not reimburse in this situation for several reasons. First, all puppies carry parasites. In healthy, stress-free animals, they do not affect the dogs. When a dog becomes stressed, the immune system weakens and the parasites take over. Second, you did not stay with her for the first 3-7 days, which is generally required by contracts, because a puppy that age needs CONSTANT attention- it was very irresponsible of you to go off to work and leave her. Small puppies need to eat every 2 hours to prevent hypoglycemia, and should be kept in a minimally stressful environment. You can ask them, but I work in a pet store (I'm only the groomer, but I know how the puppy sales work) and those are clauses in our contract. If you leave or stress the puppy during the first few days, causing hypoglycemia or parasitic episodes, we do not pay for the vet bills because it was the fault of the owner and not the store. Like I said, ALL puppies have parasites and need to be treated for them several times when they are young. You need to STAY HOME with the puppy for the next few days, make sure she's eating every 2 hours, don't take her anywhere or have people over, and do not stress her! This is exactly why dogs are NOT presents, especially not puppies! Bringing home a Christmas puppy is the WORST thing you can possibly do to the poor dog.

Sadly, this happen alot with buying puppys from a pet store.

Pet store puppys come from places called Puppy Mills, a puppy mill is a substandard kennel where unhealthy, overbred dogs were kept in horrendous conditions.

All puppy mills care about are making money, and could care less if the dogs are healthy, or if the bitches (female dog) are fed. Alot of times they are starving for lack of nutrietion because puppy mills dont feel the need to buy good brand food for nursing dogs.

they keep the ***** and her litter together in one tiny cage, where they stay untill the mother is bred again, and the puppys go off to a pet store.

Which is where you come in. Im very unsuprised your pup is sick, and I doubt that they will pay for the vet bill, since technically, they too bought it 'sick'

Sadly, they only thing they most likly would do, is if you give the pup back, and get your $200-$1000 back (depending on what you paid.

The next time you get a dog, please dont suport the puppy mills again, Either go to a reputible breeder ( not a back yard breeder- who also only cares about the money)
or adopt. The ONLY petstore i would EVER buy a pet from is Petco or Petsmart, when they hold an adoption day. Dogs that you adopt, by law must be healthy before adoption. Also spayed/ nuetured.

I would just love your little Yorkie now,But never buy from the horrible puppy mills again! They are hoorible, and only stay because ppl buy from pet stores. Although I really dont think you or your BF new this... so please, Have a merry Christmas, Give the yorkie a hug for me, and remeber what you learned about puppy mills....

Pet store puppies usually end up sick. Those puppies come from horrible puppy mills where all the dogs are crammed in small wire cages, forced to have litter after litter. The puppies are ripped away from mom too early and thrown into a pet store window. It's very unfortunate that your boyfriend, unknowingly, supported such a terrible business.

I'm very sorry you're in this situation. Research on pet store puppies and where to find a responsible Yorkshire Terrier breeder could have saved you this heartache. I'm not sure if they'll reimburse your vet bill, but you can certainly try. Good luck :)

A Christmas puppy from a pet store is just about the worst kind of way to guarantee you are getting a healthy puppy.

You do need to go back to the pet store and talk to them. Be prepared for the worst though. If you try to take the dog back, the pet store owner will likely guilt you into keeping the dog. They'll tell you they will give you a replacement puppy or your money back in exchange for your puppy, which they are going to put to sleep.

If you ask for your money back, they may tell you that you have to return the dog to them. Again, they will put it to sleep. They KNOW that you can't make this kind of decision, so they win.

If you're lucky, the current illness will be treatable and your puppy will live a normal life. If you're not, then you may end up with a dog who is blind, has epilepsy, whose teeth do not come in or fall out, etc....

First, take care of your puppy.

Second, check out www.puppymills.com

It sounds like what she might have had was coccidea. It's a small parasite that lives with in the mother. It is passed down to the pups. Now, so long as the pup doesn't get stressed, the coccidea doesn't have a chance to take hold. Once the pup gets stressed out, the coccidea takes hold. Many pups that come from the south are being sold with coccidea. As it's easy to spread around, it's in their poo as well. Even after you treat the dog, it may be healthy again, but it's still a carrier, if it ever has pups, it will pass the coccidea on to them. If it ever becomes stressed out again, the coccidea will flourish once more. Coccidea is actually a chicken parasite, and somewhere down here, someone had lots of dogs and lots of chickens and they were infected and passed it around.

the same thing happened to my puppy. about 2 days after we bought him, he would vomit and he got diherea. we took him to the vet and found out he had parasites. we thought he might have gotten them when we took him out to play outside. he had to take med. for about a week. after that he was fine. but i think it was worth it to pay the bill

Depends on the purchase agreement you signed with them. They're probably only obligated to give you your money back for the puppy.
