Satan knew God's almighty power and did not challenge it. Instead he questioned whether God's creatures would choose to submit to God's authority. Did they not have the right to refuse to worship God? He had chosen to stop doing that. Would not others do so too if given a choice? If God responded by wiping Satan out, that would leave the question unsettled and - indeed - suggest Satan was right to resist God's power if it was based upon 'might is right'.
God has never operated on that basis. He allowed Satan to resist him and gave him room to test the first humans. By subtle deception, Satan persuaded Adam and Eve to rebel against their dependence on God, thus spoiling their perfect relationship with God (which is precisely what he had done). Job was also tested by Satan in order to see if he would still serve God despite all blessings being removed and suffering arising instead. Job - The Test Case - proved that even sinful people will choose to maintain integrity to God, and good relationship with him, rather than rebel in the face of adversity. It's not a question of power but of persuasion. The story of the wind saying to the sun that he could get a man to take off his overcoat more quickly than the sun is similar. The sun won.

My thoughts are that only God can create something from nothingness. Lucifer could only manipulate that which was already created. He was jealous and wanted to share the same power with God and be an equal. He wanted to create. God had contained all of the "bad" in a place known as the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. All of the angels knew where it existed too and knew not to open the door. Man was also present and probably an eternal being co-existing with the angels and God. Lucifer tempted Eve and Adam through Eve to open that door. He knew that if he opened it himself that he would die. Once the door was opened, then with the knowledge came sin. With sin came death. It was Lucifer's attempt to take over heaven and it failed. I believe that Lucifer didn't know the knowledge contained in the tree and thought that God was protecting the knowledge to prevent the angels from learning how to create. So, by tempting man, he could get to the knowledge and man would die for it. The knowledge wasn't there and that is why the attempt failed. Then, 1/3rd of the angels who were loyal to Lucifer fell to Earth and he became Satan. Mankind was also quarantined to the Earth because God didn't want Man to open another door called the Tree of Life. Doing so would have given Man knowledge that for some reason only known to God would have been devastating. Anyway, these are my thoughts. I am no theologian but I do read my Bible a lot and enjoy good religious conversation.

Not much is revealed about the questions you are asking. So one would have to do some guesswork. Take whatever you can.
We know that Lucifer was the highest among the angels. He was the leader of all angels. My conjecture is that just as angels are invisible to us, God is invisible to angels. God is too mysterious even for angels. The Son of God, Jesus Christ, was the visible part of the Godhead through Whom God created everything. Lucifer coveted the position of Christ since Lucifer was the highest among all the visible beings. He could not bring himself to bow down to a visible being Whom he considered probably equal to himself. God made it clear that Christ was equal to God but Lucifer was not convinced. His rebellion became open and he was thrown out of heaven. Christ met Lucifer on his own ground, not in the form of God, but as a human being and defeated him.
What purpose did all this accomplish? The mystery of the character of God was revealed. Maybe this was the only way God's real character of love for His creatures could be revealed - whether God has enough love for His creatures to save them and what is the result of going against God. These issues have been settled forever.

On the first day of creation God created the light and the dark. The light was good and dark was evil. The sun, moon and stars weren't created until the fourth day. The concept of creation couldn't begin with good and evil. Satan is that tool of creation purposed to destroy. Being cast out of heaven and given the earth as his kingdom, he was here in the beginning of the creation of man. Basically it can be said that he is only doing the job for which he was created.

Pride was/is Lucifer's downfall.
That is why he uses it as such an effective weapon against God's saints.
Think about major downfalls in men's (women also, "men" is a generalization of the human race) lives. They all center around pride or arrogance.
How did Lucifer entice Eve? "You can be like God." He played on her pride.
How did Lucifer tempt Christ?

Pride, in most cases, usually sends wisdom out the window.
We do not know that much about the pre-fall heaven. What we do know about God is that though He is all powerful enough to create the heavens and the earth, He does not Lord Himself over His creation like some petty dictator. Rather, He pulls back His rule to allow freedom of choice and destiny. With free will, and the ability to choose, you have true worship and not praise under compulsion or threat.

Well, I must say, that's a creative question. :)
Arrogance I think is one excellent reason.
Remember what it was that motivated him to rebel. There he was, sitting in heaven along with all the other good angels. One day, God creates Adam & Eve and they and all of the humanity to follow would love and worship their creator. In that angel's mind he said, "I want that"... "Why can't I get that worship". "I'm powerful too" So ... that arrogance, that thinking he could rule or be better than God is why he ignored the obvious.
He knows his time is short which is why there is such chaos on the earth today.

Satan was so completely arrogant he really thought he could take over. Even immortal souls apparently lose their grip on reality when they start thinking they're better, smarter and stronger than anyone else.
We have a saying: Satan is intelligent, but sometimes he's not very clever.

He was stupid but not brain dead. He never challenged God's power but His right to rule. By this he side stepped being killed outright.
Satan got into this from his pride. That pride in himself made him think since he was a higher life form, he deserved worship from the lower forms so he schemed how to do it and live to tell.

How do you know that Lucifer actually failed? There is a possibility he was able to cast aside God and claim the throne. After all, Lucifer is the great deceiver.
